Please describe your ideal engagement. Feel free to include issue area and scope of project:

TurningWest, Inc. believes that most executive transitions fail for three reasons: 1) no one considers the transition of the organization’s culture from one leader to another; 2) poor preparation for the emotional impact of the departing leader; and 3) too little preparation for the entry of the new leader. Our signature Culture and Leadership Transition consultation guides organizations through all three of these vital elements to a successful leadership transition. We employ the philosophy of coming alongside our clients to partner to co-create the success they seek. We are process consultants trained in Organization Development and Leadership theory. In this we deploy a robust developmental process for growing more and better leaders. Training alone is insufficient. We follow our signature Leadership Development Model of 2-3-4-1 as follows: 2 Parts Instruction: Acquiring information on skills, techniques, and models is essential for developing leaders. 3 Parts Coaching: “As iron sharpens iron so one person sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17) 4 Parts Praxis: Deliberate practice in a particular context is a paramount component of learning to lead. 1 Part Reflection: Self-reflection and external evaluation solidifies and deepens learning.

Briefly name and describe 1-3 examples of executive transitions with which you have been involved as a consultant (please prioritize NSI-funded and/or LA-based organizations).

Toberman Neighborhood Center – after conducting a thorough organization audit it was revealed that there existed a highly dysfunctional organizational culture. TurningWest was further engaged to conduct our Culture Realignment process prior to building their formal succession plan using our Culture and Leadership Transition process. The client reports that not only are they much healthier now, but they are also prepared for both emergency or planned leadership transitions in the future. Activities, Recreation, and Care – this I/DD residential care organization engaged TurningWest for guidance in creating a succession plan. Quickly the organization became aware of its extreme dysfunctional board and culture and then engaged us to lead our Culture Realignment process before we completed the succession plan. The result of both of these consultations lead to a vastly stronger board and a healthier culture that directly led to a successful new Executive Director selection. This new E.D. was reassured that she would not be surprised to find she had entered a dysfunctional system but one that now knew its culture, had redressed many of its issues, and knew exactly what it needed to work on in the future. New Morning School – founded 47 years ago by the current Head of School, this private parochial school faced its very first leadership transition. The founder wisely recognized that a high percentage of organizations flounder in this initial transition, TurningWest was engaged to help them articulate their organizational culture was embedded into their educational philosophy. Our Culture and Leadership Transition consultation enabled them to fully articulate their culture and prepare it for new leadership, plan a thorough strategy for the highly emotional exit of its beloved founder, and ready the school to welcome its next leader.

Add any other information you feel would aid in understanding the value you or your consulting firm can bring to an organization preparing for or implementing an executive transition:

Culture is one of the most expansive and comprehensive intellectual concepts in the totality of human knowledge. Culture influences every aspect of our lives without our being cognizant of its moment-by-moment influence. It is no less than the entirety of the social environment we live in. Every organization has a unique culture. This culture is important to them as it forms who they are, what they do, and why they do it. Culture is a key determinant of success as well as team morale and esprit de corps. When culture has become dysfunctional, bringing new executive leaders into the culture can be explosive. TurningWest has created a process to articulate the very heart of an organization’s unique culture. We have our own signature process using ten primary culture embedding mechanisms to realign dysfunctional culture so that the organization does not bobble the leadership transition. Our Culture and Leadership Transition model for succession planning is especially useful for such dysfunctional organizational cultures but is valuable even for healthy cultures. We emphasize in our approach how an organization can become more aware of their culture and subsequently preserve its strengths while addressing its shortcomings.
